How To Not Die: Of boredom when there's no power
I can't tell you how to not die when the power goes out. It depends on where you are, who you're with, where you are, and why it's happened.
I can tell you how to not die due to boredom.
Because there's so much fun you can have, depending on what your definition of fun is.
You might not have the internet, where you're reading this right now.
Here's what you can do instead.
- If you have devices that were formerly online keep going offline, keep a local copy of what you spend your time doing online.
- You can touch grass. By gardening. If it's morning. If you have space. If you don't have space, keep a plant, and I mean a single plant, and just focus on keeping that alive. If it dies, when you go online again, figure out why.
- Can't write comments online? Can't send that email? Write in offline mode. No battery? Write in a notebook. Post them later if you still want to. Pen and paper don't need batteries. Pencils don't run out of ink. Pens do, so if you're using pens, have more pens, depending on how much you're writing. (btw if you're writing enough to run out of pencils, you might be writing a book, show it to someone)
- Now you have paper. Great. You can do origami. You can find how to do basic folds online in a tutorial format of your choice. There are YouTube videos, Instructables, a whole lot of other websites explaining how to do it. Pick wherever you can learn it. You can practice.
- Also paper friendly: art. Can't draw? You can doodle. Art technically has no rules. Make a doodle, stick it on your fridge with a magnet, call it art.
- For those who love music, find a cheap kid's piano or get a device that plays mp3s. Devices that store and play music still exist. Dig up an old mp3 player or find someone near you who does.
- Love videos? Well, too bad. This is the hardest. You have to go outside. Now you have to get a camera. A photography camera. And take pictures. And again, if you want to share them, you can always transfer and share them later.
- And finally, read. Those books you keep buying and not reading, now is the time to read them. You have nothing better to do. Once you're done reading what you have, borrow what you haven't read from someone else who has books.
- And then, when you get bored of doing all of these alone, play a game. Board games if you have a board game and also people you live with who can play with you. If you don't have a board game, you can still recreate those, whatever is your favorite, with pen(cil) and paper. Don't know any? Make your own rules. Create your own win conditions. But skip keeping score, who cares.
- If you do any of the above and then have reached this point, the last thing to do when you can't do any of the above or you run out of batteries, it's time to now go out and talk to whoever is living next to you. They also don't have power. They might have batteries. They might also have any of the things above in this list. They might also play that game with you.
And that's the end of my list. There's nothing else. End of session.
Want to share your own ideas? You can make your own list and add it to your blog.
If you want to reach me, there's a form at the end of my last blog post. Fill that. I hate copying and pasting, so I won't do it here.
